A Roaring Upset and a No-Hitter for the Columbia Prep Lions

By Robert Heilberg

It was truly an impressive week for Boy’s Varsity baseball at Columbia Prep, as they defeated ninth-ranked Berkeley Carroll on Thursday and then followed up on that with a no-hitter the next day against league rival, Calhoun. Coming off a tough loss in a tight game earlier in the week against Trevor Day, the Lions got back on the field after an off day and made some noise by pulling off one of the biggest upsets in recent memory, defeating Berkeley Carroll by a score of 14-11. Seniors Dylan Richards and Charlie Lynn stole the spotlight, with Richards recording seven RBI’s in just the one game while going 4-4 on the day, which also included a three-run homer, and Lynn notching a four-out save on what was supposed to be an off day for the staff ace. Richards fell just a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.

“Just to go out and compete with them was incredible, I’ve truly never seen nine guys work so hard,” exclaimed Lynn following the huge upset. Lynn also proclaimed the game to be one of the biggest athletic achievements of his career, and praised his teammates for battling to the end despite missing two regular starters due to injury and illness, and also having star catcher, senior Anthony Koka battling a pulled hamstring sustained in the previous game against Trevor Day. Lynn, making his first relief appearance of the season, owned an ERA of 0.64 coming into the contest, and notched his first career save in clutch fashion. With the win, the Lions improved to 7-1-1 on the season, while also handing Berkeley Carroll their first loss of the season and putting a dent on their chances for a #1 seed in the state tournament.

The following day, the Lions wasted no time in getting back in action following the big upset of Berkeley Carroll. They faced Calhoun in league action, while sending freshman, Scott Kauffman, to the mound for his first career start at the Varsity level. His first career varsity start is likely one he will never forget, as he threw a five-inning no-hitter (mercy rule after five innings), striking out eight while not allowing a single ball out of the infield, and also notching his first career RBI in a banner day for the freshman, as the Lions won their second game in as many days, 11-0. “I was a little big nervous going out, but I was able to settle in and my teammates did the rest,” was Kauffman’s modest reaction to his no-hitter. The Lions will rap up the regular season next week with two league contests against Loyola and Calhoun, and a matchup with the Academy of American Studies on Monday. After that it will be on to the postseason, as the Lions can clinch the division with a win against Loyola on Friday of next week.
